The BMW i3 and BMW i8 vehicles will mark the first mass produced cars to use structural CFRP. In fact, this material is currently being produced in Moses Lake, Washington at an ultra-modern plant that is completely powered by renewable, hydroelectric power.
BMW LifeDrive is an architectural concept that was purpose-built for electric vehicles. Comprised of two separate units, the Life Module and the Drive Module form the framework for BMW i vehicles.
The Life Module is a high-strength and lightweight passenger compartment made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). This, along with the aluminum chassis of the Drive Module, offsets the additional weight of the batteries of an electric car.
The Drive Module is an aluminum chassis that forms a solid foundation and protects the battery. Aluminum is around 30% lighter than steel but just as strong.
The lithium-ion battery cells are stored underneath the passenger compartment of the car. This gives the vehicle optimum, 50:50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity. By housing all of the key driving components in this lower module, there is no tunnel running through the center of the car. This creates an especially roomy interior for passengers to enjoy.
BMW's eDrive technology originates from many years of EfficientDynamics development and research. EfficientDynamics helps deliver vehicle technology that increases consumption efficiency. This lowers overall emissions while increasing performance and exhilaration.
As an extension to EfficentDynamics, the eDrive system features an all-electric motor that provides incredible torque and exhilaration from a standstill. It also combines innovative lithium-ion battery technology with a heating/cooling system for intelligent energy management. The smooth, streamlined shape of the BMW i3 is driven by efficiency and aerodynamics. The stream flow design brings more light into the interior for a brighter, more airy space. The silhouette of the vehicle merges the window surfaces throughout the car to provide great visibility in nearly any driving situation.
The opposing coach doors give access to the large, open space of the interior, while the characteristic "black band" runs from the hood over the roof to the trunk of the vehicle to denote a feeling of lightness. By locating the battery in the floor of the Drive Module, no center tunnel divides the interior. This creates an open and airy feel for both the driver and passengers.
And for the driver, the i3 features a unique, freestanding steering column that contains all essential operational elements directly on and around the steering wheel. The simplistic design of the instrument panel creates a clean look within the cabin, allowing for the beautifully crafted interior to shine.
Adrenaline rushes just as fast in kilowatts. The all-electric motor of the BMW i3 boasts 170 hp and a maximum torque of 184 lb-ft. The full torque is available from a standstill giving this EV the high-performance feel inherent in every BMW.
Accelerating from 0–60 in approximately 7 seconds, the i3 maneuvers with impressive agility in just about every situation. The vehicle's extraordinarily small turning circle of 32.3 feet and precise steering setup (2.5 turns from lock to lock) further enhance the agile handling of the i3. Equally impressive is its silent driving experience. Efficiency has never sounded better.
Three energy modes (COMFORT, ECO PRO, and ECO PRO+) accommodate any driving style. The COMFORT mode is the standard setting, providing the standard range of 80 to 100 miles before needing to charge. In ECO PRO mode, the range increases up to approximately 12% by regenerating any energy regained through braking.
Finally, ECO PRO+ mode maximizes range about 12% more by limiting the top speed and switching comfort settings, like heating or air conditioning, to an energy-saving mode. When comparing ECO PRO+ mode to the COMFORT mode, the range potential is increased up to approximately 24%.
The lithium-ion high-voltage battery goes up to 100 miles in range on a single charge. Its uniquely intelligent battery heating/cooling system ensures that the range of the BMW i3 is less affected by temperature fluctuations than other electric vehicles (EVs).
This contributes to the overall life of the battery cells, allowing drivers to get the most out of their EV as possible. And with Brake Energy Recuperation, every time the driver lets off the accelerator, kinetic energy is converted into electricity to extend the battery's charge.
BMW i offers an elegantly designed home charging solution that gives drivers an easy and safe way to charge an EV. Using this home charging system, the BMW i3 can be fully charged in approximately 3 hours. The standard charging cable is designed to have your battery topped off by simply plugging into a dedicated 120-volt outlet.

The Near-Future You EV Calculator should only be used to roughly project the financial and environmental impacts of switching to an electric vehicle. The numbers will vary from driver to driver, as well as from vehicle to vehicle.
To project various levels of CO2 emissions, we worked with the assumption that a gas vehicle consumes 22 mpg, diesel vehicle 30 mpg of fuel, and a hybrid vehicle 60 mpg. This also assumes an average fuel tank size of 18 gallons.
The Estimated Fuel Savings number is determined based on your estimated consumption of gas, minus the estimated cost to charge your electric vehicle. In addition, we assumed that an average driver can drive a maximum of ten hours a day with an average of 50 miles per hour for our savings calculations.

At BMW i, sustainability is at the very core of our value system. When a vehicle is born electric, it's designed to be beneficial to the environment. This includes the value chain of parts and manufacturing.
When it comes to lightweight vehicle materials, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) is the optimum and highly unprecedented choice. It is extremely strong and lightweight, being at least as strong as steel, but around 50% lighter.
The Life Module of BMW i vehicles is constructed exclusively from CFRP, providing a far longer life span in comparison to conventional steel structures. The key to this super-high-strength material lies within the carbon fibers, which are exceedingly tear-resistant along their length. These fibers are woven into lattice structures and embedded in a plastic matrix to create the carbon fiber/plastic composite material, CFRP.
CFRP fibers are manufactured in Moses Lake, Washington. This plant is completely powered by renewable, hydroelectric power—helping to stay true to BMW i's focus on sustainability.
Germany's BMW Landshut Plant opened in March 2012 and has been using carbon fibers to produce the ultra-lightweight carbon parts that compose one-third of the body components for BMW i models. This plant sets an ecological standard with its significant reduction in primary energy use, having a consumption of 25% below legal regulations.
Leipzig, Germany is home to the very first production plant for BMW's electromobility mission powered by four on-site wind turbines. In March 2011, the plant began its expansion and transformation into a center for EVs—where CFRP components, plastic parts and the bodies of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 will be manufactured.
With its use of renewable resources and naturally treated raw materials, the interiors of BMW i vehicles are characterized by innovative, sustainable design. Overall, 25% of the BMW i3's interior is made of renewable raw materials and recycled plastics, with 25% more accounting for the exterior.
Premium materials like open-pore eucalyptus wood used in the dashboard and instrument panels are made entirely of timber grown in Europe and are certified as 100% sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council®. This means that there are shorter supply channels to further guarantee sustainability in all stages of production.
The leather is tanned by using a natural process derived from olive leaves. The extract from the leaves helps provide extra protection against fading and wear, while still giving the leather a unique look and impressive feel.
Compared to the BMW production average, the BMW i3 is expected to consume 70% less water per vehicle due to the great efficiency of the Leipzig plant.
The success of the BMW i3 proves that true sustainability is achievable and demonstrates BMW i's dedication to changing the future of mobility. Over its entire product life cycle, the BMW i3 is estimated to reduce its carbon footprint by over one-third in comparison to a combustion engine vehicle in the same class.
Even more impressive, if the vehicle is powered by purely renewable electricity, this same statistic increases to well over 50%. The navigation function within the app shows points of interest and nearby charging stations with the option to send them directly to your vehicle.
The Navigation feature displays information you need to make your drive as easy as possible. At the heart of this lies a dynamic range map that takes into account relevant factors that could impact your drive.
This includes your battery charge level, driving style, topographic conditions or even the current traffic situation. ECO Route is an additional feature that helps you find the most efficient way to reach your destination.
