    Recently, vehicles from 19 different automakers were recalled to replace driver and passenger airbags made by auto parts supplier Takata that may explode and cause serious injury or death. Certain BMW models from 2000—2015 may be affected. If your vehicle is affected by this recall, we encourage you to take immediate action to have your FREE repair completed at your local BMW dealership. BMW is committed to addressing the needs and concerns of our customers affected by this industrywide issue.

    How Different Areas are Affected

    The chemical compound (or "propellant") in the airbag may deteriorate over time. Temperature and humidity play a large role in how rapidly degradation occurs, as well as the age of the vehicle. Therefore, older vehicles and hotter, more humid areas are given higher priority in terms of when Takata airbag recall mailings are sent out.

    • States in Zone A are given top priority - unsafe propellant degradation may occur between 6 - 9 years.
    • States in Zone B are given second priority - unsafe propellant degradation may occur between 10 - 15 years.
    • States in Zone C are given final priority - unsafe propellant degradation may occur between 15 - 20 years.

    Additional Zone A States: Hawaii, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
