ULTIMATE RACING WHEELCHAIR
BMW collaborated with U.S. Performance Team athletes to build a competition wheelchair that pushed the limits of sport. Through advanced engineering and innovative use of lightweight materials, BMW built quite possibly the most advanced racing wheelchair; helping the team win 7 medals, 4 of them gold.
BMW applies their unique knowledge of vehicle aerodynamics to inspire a groundbreaking design that left the U.S. Performance Team athletes in the best position to go for the gold.
Advanced carbon fiber construction.
Employing carbon fiber allows BMW to redesign the wheelchair form for maximum aerodynamic performance, increase chassis rigidity, and improve the wheelchair’s strength-to-weight ratio for an unbeatable performance.
BMW believes in designing around the driver, and uses 3D body scans to guarantee the performance wheelchair is a glove-like fit. Each competition wheelchair is custom built for the athlete, optimizing performance for every competition.
BMW MEDAL-WINNING BOBSLED
BMW’s involvement led the USA Bobsled team to a winning streak, ending a 62-year medal drought. The two-man bobsled event defines winners and losers in 100ths of a second, and only BMW has the level of precision and expertise to develop a medal-winning bobsled.
Like every BMW, the bobsled endured rigorous testing and aerodynamic wind tunnel optimization, resulting in an aerodynamic and fast sled. Angular edges enhance the performance of the bobsled and ensure the first medal for the U.S team in over half a century.
Carbon fiber design.
Carbon fiber is light and rigid – making it the perfect material for the competition bobsled. BMW engineers applied their extensive knowledge of this advanced material to produce a powerful, lightweight bobsled that set the USA Bobsled team up for success.
BMW engineers and designers used lightweight materials to remove 15 pounds and strategically redistributed that extra weight. This created a bobsled with optimal balance and a lower center of gravity.
ADVANCED UNDERWATER TECHNOLOGY
BMW used their expertise in autonomous driving technologies and motion tracking to help USA Swimming refine every stroke underwater. Through the use of LED lights, engineers developed an in-water tracking system to capture and analyze an athlete’s dolphin-kick motion. This gave the athletes a better understanding of their swim styles and allowed them to train for faster pool times.
