    FAQS

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT BMW ELECTRIC VEHICLES

What is the difference between an electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid?

The main difference comes down to its power system. A battery electric vehicle, also known as an all-electric vehicle (EV or BEV), is entirely powered by an electric motor. Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) have a dual power system that combine an electric motor with a conventional gasoline engine. Find out more about the BMW plug-in hybrid lineup here.

Is BMW experienced in manufacturing batteries? What is the battery lifespan in an all-electric BMW?

The BMW Group responsibly sources raw materials from leading suppliers for battery cell production and has been manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles since 2013. BMW is committed to relentless research and development in the field of battery technology. The current generation of batteries in BMW’s all-electric vehicles reflects this expertise and experience.

The ambient temperature, number of cycles, age of the battery (regardless of use), and other factors influence battery life. For your peace of mind, BMW Group offers an eight-year (or 100,000-mile) battery warranty that also covers against excessive battery capacity loss (if net battery capacity is less than 70% of its original nominal value) – whichever should occur first.

    What are dual electric motors?

When the vehicle has two separate electric motors driving the wheels, the vehicle is defined as having dual electric motors. Dual electric motors result in additional power and the ability to have all-wheel drive – one electric motor drives the front drive wheels, and one electric motor drives the rear drive wheels.

    What is brake energy regeneration?

Regenerative braking technology allows all-electric vehicles to recoup part of their energy during deceleration and braking, storing it in the battery.

What are the environmental advantages of driving an electric vehicle?

According to the US Department of Energy (https://www.energy.gov/), all-electric vehicles produce no carbon dioxide emissions when driving and can significantly reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change and air pollution – which improves public health and reduces ecological damage.

What savings, tax credits, or incentives can I expect with an electric vehicle compared to a gas-powered vehicle?

With fewer moving parts and fluids to repair and replace, all-electric BMWs have lower lifetime maintenance costs. For example, all-electric vehicles do not require oil changes. Owning an all-electric BMW may also qualify you for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500, in addition to other state incentives (including rebates, tax credits, and grants). You may also save up to $1,999/year on fuel costs.
    Learn More

What is the range on an electric BMW, and will I be able to charge on the go?

These all-electric BMW models achieve the following ranges:

    BMW i4 eDrive40: 301 miles

    BMW i4 M50: 270 miles

BMW iX xDrive50: up to 324 miles

BMW iX M60: up to 280 miles

Please note that estimated ranges are attainable when fully charged under ideal driving conditions. Actual range will vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to: vehicle model, tire and wheel selection, driving style, traffic conditions, and outside temperatures. Some vehicles may not be fully certified by the EPA and US Department of Energy. In this case, the range is an estimate according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA's test procedure standards. For EPA certification status and additional information about specific models, visit www.fueleconomy.gov.

The EPA and US Department of Energy estimates have not yet been released for the 2022 BMW iX M60. Estimated range of up to 280 miles according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards.

Not only is the range on an electric BMW equipped to support everything from your daily commute to your favorite weekend road trip, you can charge on the go with complete ease.
Enjoy 2 years of complimentary 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America’s 3,000+ fast charging stations nationwide.   All 2022 BMW all-electric vehicles come with the Flexible Fast Charger – a portable device that allows you to plug in your all-electric BMW at a 120V or a 240V outlet on-the-go.

What are all-electric BMWs like to drive?

All-electric BMWs embody BMW’s performance legacy and engineering expertise. They are fun to drive, due to instant torque and linear acceleration of the electric motor. BMW EVs have as much torque from complete standstill as at high speed. All BMWs are about balance, designed with near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. This ideal balance is maintained in BMW EVs – resulting in great driving dynamics, precise steering, and agile handling.

What safety features do electric BMWs have?

Safety comes first at BMW. BMW electric vehicles are equipped with the latest safety technology – utilizing a range of advanced sensors, radars, and cameras to monitor surroundings and the road ahead. Advanced safety features include emergency braking with pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, blind-spot monitoring, parking assistance, lane-departure warning, and more. These driver-assistance features are designed to keep you and your passengers safe – as well as other drivers and pedestrians.

Additional state incentives may also be available. Tax credits may be complex and are subject to change without notice. While BMW of North America, LLC does its best to keep this information up-to-date, it cannot guarantee the current accuracy of your eligibility. We recommend consulting a tax professional to validate credit availability and eligibility.

Fuel savings are based on annual fuel cost calculation between 2022 BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible and 2022 BMW i4 M50. Assumptions: annual driving distance of 15,000 miles; share of 80% home charging/20% public charging (i4 M50); 18 mpg for M4 Competition xDrive Convertible (gas-powered) according to fueleconomy.gov; and i4 M50 at 245-mile range according to preliminary BMW AG tests, based on the EPA’s test procedure standards, and 81.5 kWh high-voltage battery net capacity. Prices at time of calculation (August 2021): $3.26/gallon of gasoline (national grade average), home electricity rate $0.13/kWh (national average), DC Fast Public Charging 50 kW EVgo charger rate $0.33/min (see EVgo.com). Fuel prices and home electricity rates based on US Energy Information Administration.
