musica viva BMW Composition Prize

The musica viva BMW Composition Prize is an integral part of the musica viva concert series. This series was founded in 1945 by composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann and has been directed by Udo Zimmermann since the 1997-98 season. Within the framework of this project, we help create impulses for the future by commissioning new orchestral works that reflect contemporary intellectual and artistic developments and show the breadth of modern music in all of its facets.

Once each year or two since the 1997-98 season, we have invited entries to the musica viva BMW Composition Prize competition, which young composers throughout the world are eligible to enter. Prizes are awarded to works of various musical genres, which are then premiered by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with prominent soloists. The prizes, whose monetary value amounts to EUR 25,000 (First Prize: EUR 10,000; Second Prize: EUR 7,500; Third Prize: 5,000; special talent awards: EUR 2,500) are decided on by an independent jury of musicians and musicologists who select the winners from hundreds of entries sent from all over the world.
