1,593 auctions in London, Dubai, New York, Hong Kong. He has brought the hammer down on over 250,000 objects,generating turnover in excess of $900 million. And still Hugh Edmeades feels that frisson of nerves, his pulse rate escalating as fast as the bids. 28,000 dollars, 29, 30, 31, 32... 32,000 dollars, ladies and gentlemen. Are we all done?

In 2005, a London gallery bid more than £15 million ($27 million) at Christie's for a rare ceramic bowl - a record price for an Asian artwork. In June of last year, Edmeades auctioned the most expensive British item of furniture to date. The one-off Kenure Cabinet by Thomas Chippendale fetched a record price of £2.4 million ($4.5 million). The exhaustion only hit Edmeades as he stepped off the rostrum. It was a marathon made up of numerous short, fast sprints.
